‘Art Seeds’ - Matsūra Historical Museum, Hirado, Japan (2021)
Since ancient times Hirado has flourished as an international port of call. The Hirado Dutch Trading Post is a symbol of this legacy and to celebrate the first decade of its reconstruction, the Art Seeds Hirado Art Festival will be held with the entire port town as its backdrop.
Shops and public spaces are turned into exhibition halls which can be easily navigated by foot. All art is made by artists who have a special bond with the Netherlands and are inspired by Hirado’s local customs, history, geography and people. ‘Art Seeds’ Hirado aims to connect Hirado’s fascinating past with the present day and bring it into the future. 'Open Isolation' is a combination of the traditional Japanese architecture of the teahouse and a picture of the entrance door of a Dutch nuclear bunker. The thin Japanese sliding doors and the thick nuclear door are both made for the same purpose: to protect us from the outside world. The only difference is their thickness. The picture of the nuclear door and the question of what is going on behind it in contrast to the openness of the teahouse is an essential part of my work.
'Sculpture 2': In all cultures exists a feeling of space.
This concrete object is a universal shape which can be used anywhere to experience space. Putting the object on different levels intensifies the object. The sand comes from several Japanese beaches, and the flowing of the sand creates different shapes inside and outside the concrete object.
